Hi fellow Trillian users!
Firstly I want to apologize for my poor English, I'm from the Netherlands. Please feel free to point out spelling errors or other errors.
This is a topic about a bug in Trillian that only occurs if you are using Win95. The emoticons look distorted. Not all people with Win95 have exactly the same distortions with their emoticons. I attached a screenshot so you can see how it looks on my comp. The emoticons are both distorted in the menu and when used in the message window. This bug does exist at least in more than one .7x version of Trillian. I'm using Trillian v0.74 (w/ Patch D) so I have the latest version and patch.
I searched the whole forum for a solution and I found two solutions. I describe them below to save you the work of reading through the topics that describe the solutions, and I changed the second solution so it works with the latest free version of Trillian. If you want to contact the persons that came up with the solutions or want to read more about this bug, look at the list of topics I made that are about this bug. It is at the end of this post.
FIRST SOLUTION: download and use a Win95-compliant skin
The Aikon2 skin does work better on a Win95 comp than the default skin. At the top of this window click "Skins". Then use Skin Finder at the right to jump to the "Aikon Squared" skin. Download and unzip it. (Read the FAQ if you don't know how, if that's to hard for you or if you're a computer dummy you can ask me, I won't mind if you ask me questions you could also read the answer of in the FAQ.) You will see the folder the skin is in, is actually Aikon2 . By the way the readme.txt file has no important information. Change your skin in Preferences > Skins. Of course you have to exit trillian and restart. Start up Trillian again, and be surprised by all the changes :D.
The smileys do work correctly now. If you don't like this skin read Second Solution to learn how you can correct the smiley problem in the default skin. (It doesn't correct the problem completely but makes it a lot less worse.)
SECOND SOLUTION: convert emoticons.bmp to emoticons.gif
This solution is more tricky. I will only describe how you do it in the standard skin called Trillian Cordillera and located in a folder named TP2 . Locate the emoticons.bmp file, probably it is in this folder:
C:\Program Files\Trillian\skins\TP2\plugins\TP15Emoticons-16x16\
Load the emoticons.bmp file in a drawing program that can convert a .bmp file to a .gif file. You can't do this in earlier versions of MS Paint, later versions can do this I heard. Save as a .gif file.
Now first make sure to make a copy of main.xml !!!! It's located in the same folder. Then in main.xml find the next line (it's somewhere at the beginning of the file):
<bitmap name="trillianpro_16x16" file="plugins/tp15emoticons-16x16/emoticons.bmp"/>
Here change "emoticons.bmp" to "emoticons.gif".
If you were running Trillian you have to shut down Trillian and restart it. Enjoy the beautiful smileys :) :) now. You can nearly see them now as other Trillian users see them. Only the background is green. If you want really to change this and don't find a solution yourself just mail me or add my ICQ/MSN/AIM/Y! to your Trillian contact list and send me messages by ICQ or wait till I'm online. :D Don't send me MSN Messenger messages because I hate MSN Messenger :P Just kidding, you can't send MSN Messenger messages when I'm offline anyway.
I hope this will help Win95 users!
Greetings,
Paul_laudaka

I included ALL topics I found with titles that described the problem. If you would like to contact other persons with the same problem you should find them in the topic list I made. The most helpful topics are first. If you want to try other solutions there are some in the topics in the topic list below.
This is how I found this topics:

Is among other things about a Win95-compliant skin called Aikon Squared (folder name: Aikon2 ). The win95-compliant skin was pointed out by worzle in this topic. Thanx a lot for that worzle! ;)

In this topic there is the second solution described above, it's not perfect but it helps a lot! This solution was discoverd by esudL. Thanks a lot for that esudl! ;) Note: because esudl used a lower version of Trillian the solution he describes wouldn't work on the latest version of Trillian. The description in the Second Solution above is for the latest version.

Unfortunately the link in this topic to a topic with Win95-compliant skins is broken. And the link to Larida's Profile doesn't help either because there is no information about Win95-compliant skins in Larida's Profile. Maybe there are other Win95-compliant skins in the skins section of the Trillian website www.trillian.cc/skins , or on www.deviantart.com , the partner site of Trillian/Cerulean Studios.
