Fusion - W.I.P.

I'm off on holidays for a week so I thought I'd post up some of the work so far.
Most of the coding is finished for the windows you see and also for the drawered buddylist. There will be an alternate buddylist selectable from the prefs that will be a cutdown version for all you minimalistic freaks.
Any suggestions please post here and I'll see what's viable when I get back.

The skin reminds me of something I once used. May I ask where you got your inspiration from?

My suggestion is white (or at least light-colored) background - not black.

The Grafx are taken from the media player (windows classic) skin.

There will be a few different versions on initial release..I'm working on 4 alternate colors (to replace the blue, but the silver is staying) and maybe I'll make one with a black insert and one with a white.

This looks like something I would use all the time as a favorite skin. Seeing that I am so pleased with it, I would humbly request that you put a "hide" icon control in the title bar of the windows. So few skins support this, and I love the feature. Again, you are the skinner and it is your call, but I figured I could at least try. ;)

Maybe today I'm being too harsh critic.

Well, this skin is okay. The colors are fine. The textures are good as they are copied from Windows Media Player. I think the skin is very boring because all forms of all windows are consistently duplicated.

Similar to some other skinners, the skinner has not thought through how forms should be constructed, but it becomes very obviously bad when it comes to an irregular form. I would like question why all the windows shapes look the same. The reason why a skin with all windows rectangular is that we can differentiate windows by their dimensions. However, the distinct qualities of an irregular window irritates our ability to differentiate - we will realize them not as different windows, but windows manufactured in a bad way so they are in different sizes.

I think, when skinners think about irregular skins, they should carefully think about how these duplicated shapes will affect the whole visual experience.

A few quick answers...
Buddy Icons will be included, there will be a pull out bar in the right of the data entry box..
Hide buttons, I was thinking about this and you just made my mind up for me. I don't personally use them but I can see how they could be handy so they will be included.
Change Budz to Contacts, sorry about this but the default buddy skin is a bit wide already and making that name longer will just make matters worse. If you can think of another word with 3 to 4 letters I will consider it.. But you will have MD to contend with coz he came up with that one.. lmao
There is a lot of stuff that is done but you don't see as yet... Like warn buttons and show if encrypted or un-encrypted...Also "buddy" is typing is included before it gets requested =]

The "shapes" look the same because I wanted consistency throught the skin, If you are making something that is to be used by newcomers to trillian the interface should be as clear and user friendly as possible. e.g. I don't want people to have to look for the history button in a different place in one window to another.

I still don't see this skin as being irregular, unless you class anything that isn't a rectangle shape irregular and also class TP2 the same. Duplicated shapes I've already answered. =]

I think that you cannot understand what I mean:
The question of how to make a rectangular form seems not to be controlled by a rectangle. You also have a rigid definition of consistency.

Think about it. If the Microsoft designer has to add a window for the skin in the player, will the designer just duplicate the form? Probably not. The design is controlled by a set of thinking and rules - but not controlled by a definite form. One of the inspirations of Trillian Professional skin is from the Player's design too. It gives me the hint of the waves. But what i have to think about is how to develop this idea of waves.

I say these because i dont want skins is just about "i want the look of it" - this is naive and skinners are diminishing themselves as decorators. through skinning you should try to learn more about design, but not just a ripping or porting task. I want to stress skinners to think and invent. I think attempts of Solaris and Semantic skins are FAR BETTER than this one.

It's like you want to be an N'Sync Boyband or a real rock band. Continue your N'Sync. :p

As for the rest, I'll answer as a whole.

I think you are totally missing the point, most of my friends who I have converted over to trillian complain that it is too complicated and that they have to hover their mouse over the buttons to find out what they do all the time. This skin is meant to alleviate some of those problems by giving them a recognizable and logical interface. If people want icons to represent everything they can get that from your skins.

We will have to agree to disagree on design matters tho, as I have a totally different view on things to yourself, I respect your opinion and your ability and personally like TP2, but it's not to everyones taste.

Now, can you stop bitching ... lol

p.s. If you have to read a sign to distinguish your bedroom and my bathroom I would hope that you had a fair few beers that night... My wardrobe knows this from experience =]

I see both your points and I believe they are both valid.

While I agree with Kid that the skin should be built around the components and user experience, I disagree that this must be done in windows which look very different. I have never had a problem distinguishing which windows are for what, because this becomes very apparent when you view the content of the window.

My wife is quite ill at the moment and I'm stuck playing Mommy.
I am in no rush to get this skin finished as I'd rather it do everything I want from the start, with the fewest possible bugs.

To give you some sort of idea tho.. It's about a weeks work away from a useable version without the IRC part. Once there it will beta tested while I work on other parts like the minimal buddy list.

I'm back, my wife is now fully recovered and I've taken her place. lol. This just means I get to spend more time in front of the computer... =]
I restarted work on the skin last night and finished up a few loose ends I been meaning to do for ages.
This skin still won't be rush released because I keep having ideas and am trying to implement as many as possible before then.
Question: Is the trillian bar going to become an optional standard in the skins? If so I will also have to make one of them before release.

I am looking for a single beta tester at the moment. You must be able to use the skinviewer and be familiar with the way it lays things out. You also must be running windows 98 or 98se.
This is primarily to make sure the skin has no pink spots on 98 systems while I continue with the rest of the code.

Lots of it is now done.. I have one or 2 minor probs which I am leaving till the rest of the skin is finished.
It's so close in fact that a beta is going out to a few people on friday, but saying that it still wont be complete for at least another 2 weeks.

The colour ini file is taken directly from frequency just to get it running, ( I forgot all about that when I posted the screenshot, sorry MD) the fonts will not be staying that colour.

This looks like an excellent skin. I've been using one that I'm not all that thrilled about looks wise because it is really usable.
This one looks like it combines the two aspects (finally).
I'm stoked about this one, but I think I'd probably prefer a white background.

In the pictures you have been seeing the drawer was done in phases (like switching between urls,connections etc in frequency, odigo) and it worked a treat except for the fact that the drawer took 0 left position and pushed the rest of the window over to the right.. This was very annoying with the buddy list as if you had it in the bottom right when you opened the drawer the buddylist would go off the screen. I have now changed them to proper drawers, which is not the way I wanted it but seems to be the best option (if only the drawers could go in and out without flickering so bad).

Below are half of the emoticon set. I also have to stress at this point that this skin will be released the same as MD's, that means no rips,recolors or modifications. I have thought long and hard about this issue and this is my final decision so please don't ask as I don't like to offend. :p

Hello all, I hope you are all well (yes, even you kid... lol )
Thought I'd clear up a few things now I got a chance.

The skin wasn't 5 months in the making, it was 1 month in the making and then I disappeared for 3 months. This was nothing to do with the trillian community or the skin. I was given a choice by my wife, my family or the computer.

Those who know me will realize that I spent an unhealthy amount of time online (about 18 hours a day.. lmao ) and this finally cracked my missus up (can't blame her really )

I am glad that a few of you have enjoyed the skin and now that my 3 month ban is nearly up I will probably finish it. There isnt that much to do, mainly irc stuff and icons.. (and of course the trilly bar)

That's enough for now, I'm off to see what MD has been upto for the last 3 months (something good I expect.. hehe)

We spoke for most of yesterday and I think he is just a little disheartened with a few things at the moment. If that man ever decides to leave for good it would be a dark day for the Trillian community as he has been nothing but helpfull to me and I'd imagine a lot of others.

A handfull of us are lucky enough to beta test this for Flump, but it hasn't been fully released yet. Last I heard Flump took a break and StandardDC was workin' on it a little bit, then Flump came back and told us he might finish it, and vanished again :(

Glad you enjoy the skin... all the things that you have mentioned will be in the final version of the skin... This is just an alpha that was put out mainly to check for pink spots on 98 systems..
If you look at the grafx in the skin folder you will see that there are far more things there than are coded at the moment (i.e. trillian bar and all the extra emoticons)

A trilly bar is a cut down buddy list that can be expanded and retracted to save desktop space.. picture underneath

i always liked the way media player looks like but i use winamp *g*. the shape of your skin adds to its coolness. keep up the work, i will use this one for sure! id prefer white background though, and mdxps emots set. btw: it was gr8 of you to leave the computer for a whileand stand by your family. they are more important than a skin for trillian!! we will wait patiently for the completion of your work!

To make it finished, you need every part of the skin to be finished, and bug free (as far as possible). All graphics should be done, every window Trillian has coded.

For IRC, make sure the windows have graphics, and they are coded.

A Trillian-Bar is a more compact mode of a skin. Flump promised that he'll implement it later, cause he's just finishing the irc-thing. I'm very happy about that, cause I'm very bad at XML... ;-)

Anyway I just finished a new beta:

Okay, I think your right...
I changed the sounds:
-outbound sounds are off (sorry cootmaster, but I think its not neseccary)
-inbound sounds: if window is in focus you hear a silent sound, if it is out of focus you hear the 'message'-voice.

Fixed a bug that made the skin go screwy if you went to BRB mode on yahoo..
Removed the buttons that didnt work in IRC (font bigger/smaller etc) and removed the DC button from all the mediums except AIM.

If your that desperate for an outgoing sound goto "preferences" then "events" and click the advanced tab. Find "message: IM outbound" and click edit.. Put whatever sound there ya want...
The skin aint having one by default.. I know when I've sent a message, I don't need lots of noise for nothing..

This skin is far from finished... There's a difference between usable and being complete.. I wont rush release this because I didn't really intend for this to be released at this time for 0.7x. I will carry on working on this version tho until the new trillian is released and then switch to that..
The good thing is none of the work I am doing here will be wasted on the new trill so it all counts..

Final Note: If it does what ya need at the moment why do you need a non beta.

I haven't seen WMP9 yet... I know theres a leaked beta out there but I'd rather wait for a finished one. The above pic is based on the compact mode of the same skin for WMP as the rest of fusion is.

I dont mind the other color being released, but I did ask you not to release it until the other color versions were finished.. I changed my mind now tho, if you send me the version so I can tidy up that high contrast fault with the silver turning to white blocks you can put it out.. I want to try and keep a high standard and that wont take me long to fix..

I thought about this and because I intend to release as many colors (colours if in uk) as possible I am going to make them as seperate downloads.. The bmps would be too large too include all in one zip for us poor 56kers.. I could at the end make a big zip file of all the skins for you lucky people with broadband tho.

With microscopic any of the additional themes come in a .exe and people can just download the ones that they want. That's handy too, but as long as the colour themes can just be added to the base theme I'm a happy camper! :D I hate having 3 of the same basic skin but each one being a new colour!

overwrite?? Could you just have a themes folder and then you can change the skin preference via a config file? That way you don't have to redownload everytime you want to change themes.(I'm sorry, I'm being such a pain in the butt!)
