View Full Version : Problems with push [Trillian iPhone]

Super excited to finally see this get released on the appstore. Starting to get more and more disappointed with it though. I'm sure landscape mode will be in an update soon and no facebook support isn't that big of a deal I guess. However, it seems I am having problems with push. After i get the first message someone on my contacts list, I don't receive push anymore. Anyone else experiencing this?

If you mean that you don't get another push until you open Trillian then yes, this is by design. The idea here is if you have people that ton mass small messages instead of one bigger one, you don't get bombarded with push notifications if you are trying to do something on your phone. It does push a badge update though so your badge on Trillian will update accordingly.

Personally I like this design move because I can be on the computer and on my phone at the same time without getting hundreds of push notifications when I'm not using my phone.

It should still push badge updates, as Windtalker notes, and after a while it will actually revert to pushing another pop-up notification and then revert to badge updates for another chunk of time (rinse, repeat...).

We considered making an option when you initialize the session that picks whether you want /everything/ dumped to you or not, and if people really think that's a better mode of operation we can likely go put that back onto the roadmap. But honestly, in the earliest testing, having someone send:

hi!
how are you?
i just had coffee!
it was very good

anyway

lemme know

...in the space of about a minute would quickly drive the alpha testers (i.e., Cerulean employees) bat**** crazy, as you found yourself hitting 'Close.' 'Close.' 'Close.' "STOP MESSAGING ME AUGH!" ;)

Hence why we decided to try this method out instead, which the beta testers seemed to prefer as well.

Right on. I love the way it works now. I'll see that someone has sent me a message, but I don't need to follow the one-sided conversation while I'm driving.

Funny thing - I never use the landscape keyboard. I have large hands (XL gloves are tight on me) and the portrait keyboard works fine for me. I agree that we need it, but personally, it isn't something I've missed.

I like it this way, though it would be cool if Apple would let us have reminder alerts that there is a notification. I hate having to periodically check my lock screen to see if I missed something while I wasn't paying close attention to my phone.

I use StatusNotifier (JB App) which adds taskbar icons, and reminder tones... However it is not compatible with Trillian, yet...

In Beejive I turned off landscape keyboard because it seemed to shift at the slightest tilt of the phone, and take a long time to re-draw the screen... Ugh...

I'm doing fine w/o Landscape in Trillian :)

I'm noticing problems with the "smart location" stuff and the push/badges.

As I'd expect, when I get a new IM it goes to all locations. When I answer it on my laptop, I continue to get badges stacking up on my iPhone. I had a short IM conversation with a friend last night, and when I checked my phone this morning I had 11 badges showing. Every message from that conversation had gone to my laptop AND my iPhone.

Intelligent location assignment only works on the Astra network right now. Hopefully more to come soon.

Or everyone else in the world could be smart and use Astra instead of AIM. ;)

Well, it appears to me push isn't working properly. I've had one push alert from Google Talk and not one from MSN although I've had several messages and logged in several times.

I assume push isn't just for Astra Pro users?

Did you set up your services (AIM,MSN,GTALK) on the Desktop Client and use Astra to pull them to the iPhone?

If so, Try removing the accounts from the iPhone, and re-adding them and test again.

I had the issue with AIM.

I submitted a bug report: http://bugs.ceruleanstudios.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10542

Still having this issue. I am sending messages to myself from another AIM account on my computer. The messages are showing up when I run the app, but I am receiving zero push notifications for that account.

Just tried it on Yahoo as well. Same result.

Deleted the accounts from Trillian. Trying to read them fails. Passwords are incorrect. So something stupid is happening.

*sigh* back to Beejive until the next update comes out and fixes this stuff

I am having this same issue. Sometimes the badge will push and update, but I receive no jingle to let me know a new message has arrived. I only received the first one, right after I installed the app the first time. A lot of the time, though, the messages seem to disappear into a black hole, and are never recovered.

Personally, I'd rather get each and every message spammed as a push notification. Because as it is now, after the first push....I have no idea what someone is saying. Which can be vital. Often times I'll ignore a push until someone says something important enough for me to respond to.

Please give users the ability to decide if they want each push notification or just the first.

There is ALOT of confusion about this functionality and not every trillian user is going to take the time to come to the forums and find out. many of them are saying "push is broken" in th reviews and 1-starring accordingly.

:( Bring constant pushes back.

Mine is broken altogether. I'm not getting ANY push notifications. Not a first, not a second, nothing.

edit: added the accounts again. Finally accepting passwords again. But zero push notifications are being sent. Not delayed. There's simply nothing coming through.

Ok to bring everything back in line to where it should be. These are all of the things I have tried on my end to fix push notifications for my phone.

I've verified that it works for other apps (Beejive does it just fine)

I have restarted the phone

I have turned off ALL notifications Settings->Notifications->Off and back to On

I have turned off only Trillian notifications Settings->Notifications->Trillian->Off/Off/Off and back to On

I have deleted the Astra account and re-entered

I have deleted the AIM account and re-entered

I have deleted Trillian and reinstalled it (Note it didn't ask for push to be enabled the second time I installed it but everything was on when I checked the Settings)

I have turned off wifi, then 3G. Nada. It isn't the network per say

I have reset Network settings

And finally I have just restored the phone to factory settings and set it up as a new phone. Zilch.

All this and I can open the app and see messages when I start the app. But absolutely zero push notifications are getting to me. No sounds, no badges, no alerts. Not even the first one. Just plain nothing. It also isn't working for other mediums. Not just AIM. But I'm focusing on getting one working then hoping the rest fall into place.

Any suggestions from Cerulean Studios on other things I can try?

At this point I am thinking it is on your end. Since I have a factory settings iPhone with only Trillian installed. Said yes to Push Notifications when I installed. Still not getting any notifications. Not even the first one before it starts just pushing badges. Flat out, zero notifications.

Little help here?

So, it's not pushing /anything/? Not even badges? Badges should /always/ be pushed... if badges aren't getting through, there's a problem with the push notification server and that's beyond our control (or else for some reason, Trillian's not being handed a push token by the iPhone, to hand off to our server).

If badges are being pushed but you're never ever seeing a message, that's something Scott may need to look at over on the Octopus side, in which case, please open a trouble ticket or a bugzilla ticket or whatever, so it can end up in the queue and get looked at.

(This is nothing personal; right now, Scott and I are both kind of swamped -- both preparing an upcoming iPhone release, and trying to get the OS X build ready -- so neither of us is really checking the forums much, unless someone specifically points us here. Time's better spent with code at the moment!)

Logik
20 Nov 2009, 09:45 PM
That's perfectly fine and I understand you're busy.

Yea. It's not pushing anything at all. Nothing. No sounds, no badges, no alert windows. Nada, zilch, zippo, nil, nothing.

I assume it's something your side because push stuff is coming through fine for other apps. Just not trillian. It is the only app not pushing anything at all.

I'll open a ticket in the morning.

Unlike Logik, my badges are being pushed, but the pop-up alert is not. It pushed the very first IM I ever received on AIM as a notification + badge, but nothing after that, and other apps are pushing notifications just fine.

PUSH wasn't working for be, perhaps, because I had PUSH turned in the iPhone > Settings > Notification during install.

I uninstalled, turned on PUSH in iPhone > Settings > Notification, reinstalled and PUSH works great now.

That didn't fix mine. In fact I completely wiped my phone and returned to stock factory settings. It was like a brand new phone out of the box. Installed Trillian first thing. Still didn't work.

Filling out a bugzilla entry for it now.

Notes on push:

1) We'll be adding an option to "push everything" for those of you that want it.

2) We'll be improving our "intelligent push" as well, including the re-opening of the push hole after a certain amount of time passes to capture the use case described above (only got one push, missed it for whatever reason, never heard from the person again).

By continuing to improve our intelligent push (which I couldn't live without, personally, or my phone would be lighting up all day) and offering a simple push dump we hope to capture all usage cases.

Logik's problem is something else entirely and we'll try to figure it out as well.

I am having the same problem. Push worked for 1 message after install and then never again. No notifications and no badge updates, I also tried uninstalling an reinstalling as well as reseting my phone to no avail. This makes me a sad panda because push is the only reason I purchased it :-(

So more on the Push issues. Mine has started working randomly.

I just picked up my phone since plugging it in this morning to charge. I had a badge saying 5 incoming messages waiting to be viewed. Opened Trillian and there was only one message waiting.

Something is broken.

Is there anywhere we can check to see what's the status for Push notifications?

The same as others, Push was the one of the main reasons to buy the application at all, not having it working (never received any push notification, badge, sound or message) it's rather disappointing.

Rectifying my original message: Push notifications do seem to work.

I was testing sending me messages from accounts I didn't have in my contact list, and Push notifications weren't sent. But as soon as I got messages from real people who was already in my contact list (or after I added the test accounts to my contact list for testing) I began receiving the notifications as expected.

This behaviour is not bad on itself, but it should be at the very least documented, and even better, be optional. Bonus points if it's optional per IM protocol and/or account.

I haven't done extensive testing on Push conditions, mine work, although sometimes a bit slow... But I like how requests for authorizations are not Pushed as a notification...

1.1 (currently in beta) has a settings option for 'Intelligent Push.' This is the improved form of the existing 'push the first message, then just push badge updates for that person for the next X minutes.' If you turn off Intelligent Push, every single message will always be pushed.

(I used that feature for all of fifteen minutes, I admit, before I wanted to throw my phone out the window and had to turn Intelligent Push back on. Evidently, I get rather too many IMs...)

Logik
25 Jan 2010, 10:37 AM
So an update on this. I still seem to have issues with Intelligent Push being enabled. But not as frequently. With Intelligent Push disabled I still have occasional hiccups.

And Intelligent Push appears to be completely busted for Facebook. I continue getting messages with it enabled when talking to people on facebook.

What I expect? I get one or two messages pushed. Then it just updates the badge. I continue to get new messages pushed as modal dialogs, it also turns the screen on everytime. Just like a normal push.

Sort of a bummer. I found this when talking to a friend on facebook while on the computer. I turned Intelligent Push back on hoping that it would halt getting constant push messages on my phone each time either of us said anything.

Another issue i've found is that if you do send a message via the facebook website the message is sent to Trillian iPhone and when opened it looks like the person you are talking to sent the message, even though it is your own message.

Add a bug report on Facebook behavior. If you can reliably reproduce push issues, add a bug report on that, too. Both of those will be entirely on the Octopus side, but Scott's pulling his list from BZ too. :)

This is happening to me again.

Several times tonight I didn't receive push notifications.

Intelligent push is on.

I expect the first message to be pushed, each subsequent message from that person to be a badge update only, until a certain time period passes then the message is pushed again along with the badge/sound.

So I open Trillian, send a message. Get a reply back which is pushed just fine. Then out of the blue somewhere in the conversation messages just stop being pushed. I open the app and boom there's a message. Trillian icon on the desktop shows just the icon. No red message badge or anything.

Frustrating for sure.

I can only get push notifications if I have SOUNDS turned on under Notifications. Otherwise I do not get anything until I open Trillian.
If I have sounds turned off under notifications but vibrate on unseen turned on under Trillian (settings), I get no notifications or red number counts of missed messages or badges unless I am IN the application.

Intriguing sometime soon when I have a friend around to test this with I may try to recreate the scenario above. But I always have sound turned on so I haven't had any experience with this particular issue.

My thought has always been that something is clearly at fault in the intelligent push logic.

But then a few other apps aren't pushing notifications sometimes too. I suspect I'm seeing it more with Trillian because of the sheer number of notifications. I may have to chalk what I'm seeing up to Apple's push servers or reception issues/comm issues that aren't reaching my phone.

Here is an interesting thing: If you receive a message (Push) and you open Trillian and answer and close Trillian (only via Home-Button) and your chat-partner answer in just this moment Trillian will not send you a Push-Notification.

Thats really bad if you waiting for an important message ;)
