If you are like me, one of the first Cydia apps that you install after jailbreaking is Reminder, a small app that puts notifications in your statusbar, such as new mail, voicemail, missed calls, txt's and of course IM's. When I switched to Trillian for iPhone from Beejive immediately after it's release but missed having the statusbar icon that I was use to with Beejive. I have seen a few posts around here asking about this so I thought I would make a thread about it.

If you are using Reminder (the best app that does statusbar icons that I have found) you can open up the Reminder app. If you tap on the icon in the upper right hand corner it will bring you to the settings for the app (this was what I didn't know was there).
From there tap "Manage IM Support"
Click add an IM app and enter "Trillian". It must be exactly that to work properly.

Restart your phone and tada, now everytime you get an IM you will get the badge and now you will also get an IM icon in the statusbar.

+1

Used to use StatusNotifier, but Reminder is soooooo much better. You can even add custom sounds now :-D

Awesome!

Now if Kid will let us have a StatusBar Trillian Icon for the iPhone (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Will Jailbreaking be necessary? The rumor is that iPhone v4.0 will support multi-tasking.

And when is that coming out?

If past releases are any indication sometime in June/July

Probably a beta or five between next Wednesday and then.

Rumor has it that the devs will start seeing access to 4.0 SDK after next Wednesday's Big Apple Announcement, yes. If 4.0 /does/ have true multitasking, I'll definitely put better multitasking support on the task list for 2.0. Though I'll probably try to figure out a nice sane middle ground between the battery-friendly push method, and the instant-gratification, always-on, immediate-run multitasking method.

Either way, speculation isn't really useful before the Wednesday unveiling of Whatever Apple Has Up Its Sleeve.

(I say 'better' multitasking support because Trillian /is/ actually aware of Backgrounder on jailbroken phones, and has an undocumented 'multitasking background' mode. If you use Backgrounder on Trillian you'll still get badge updates on your home screen while the app is backgrounded, and the network poll frequency will be reduced to be nicer on your battery. The poll returns to full speed when you resume the app. However, that's still a very power-hungry way to run Trillian compared to the detach-and-push method.)

Found it. Seems to be called notifier.

Yea sorry about that, forgot to mention that Cydia has it under a different package name for some reason. Notifier is indeed the app that I am referring to though.

Hey, gonna bring this up again, cause I found a nice combo to use.

I have recently become utterly fed-up with these F***ing iPhone pop-up notifications.

What I did.
-Installed 'Notifier'
-Installed 'Trillian' version 1.1
-Added Trillian to the IM app list
-Set the IM reminders to 10 at 5 minute intervals
-Under Settings->Notifications->Trillian
--Set 'Alerts' to 'Off'
--Set 'Sounds' and 'Badges' to 'On'
-Under Settings->Trillian
--Set 'Intelligent Push' to 'Off'

Now I get a nice sound+badge update on every message, with no Pop-Up :D Notifier takes it a step further, and gives me a nice little notification icon in my Tray.

Just thought I'd share that with my fellow JailBreakers...

Also on another note... Though I'm excited for Backgrounding in 4.0, I do not know what would be the real advanteage, other than reducing sign-on/resume time. I LOVE the notification system Apple came up with for IM, they just need to make the notification method a bit more User friendly.

I'm going to give your method a try, I too am a little sick of the popups, especially when I am logged on to my desktop.

In regards to the multitasking. From what I can tell from the keynote it isn't really going to be like backgrounder. How it will work is that when you fast switch the app then it would save state and close, then when you switch back it just opens up the state that it was in. For an app like Trillian it won't really make any difference, the App won't be able to maintain a connection to the server when it isn't the forefront app.

For apple to really call this multitasking is somewhat of a lie, really what it is is the ability to switch between apps without going back to the homescreen. The only thing that is multitasking is background audio and task completion, and even that's a stretch.

I was wondering how trillian did that with backgrounder. I only use backgrounder for trillian and it works perfectly. There is 1 prob tho, that is if i have trillian open using backgrounder, and i switch wireless networks, then trillian will not connect anymore. I have to close trillian fully then restart and that fixes it about 85% of the time.

Yeah, I have two phones, a stock 3GS and a jailbroken first gen; I test on both. There's special code in Trillian to detect Backgrounder and behave slightly differently, as noted in my original post.

Unfortunately, right now, my first-gen has no cellular service, so I'm only on WiFi. This means I can't test every background failure mode. If you toss me info on how to reproduce, I'll look into it later. Unfortunately, at this point, any further tweaks to backgrounder stuff won't make it into 1.2, but I'll at least get it onto the list.

As Sparks has stated before, she doesn't like commenting on possible features/platforms/changes/dinner dates... It has just caused her too much grief here in the forum... Same goes for the Other Devs...

Case-in-point: Facebook-XMPP integration in Desktop 4.2, it's not there, we will have to wait for the next release even though /everyone/ was thinking it would be in for 4.2...
