I am having problems getting the IRC connections to work.

I start up the connection manager which gives me the following screen:

I select a IRC folder on the left but unfortunately I don’t know what information I should be placing in the Nickname, Alternate, Username and User Information text boxes??

Then I attempt to get a list of the chat rooms on the server and I get the following screen:

Again, what do I enter in the Server and Filename boxes? How do I get the chat room list to be displayed?

Welcome to the forums Ian.

Nickname is a name you want people to see you as, very much like "IanMB" is for these forums. Since only one person can use a nickname at a time, if someone else is using the one you choose you will be called the name under Alternate instead, so type your second best choice for nickname there. Username and User Information aren't important so I wouldn't really worry about those.

When you're connected to IRC hopefully the server name and file name will be filled in for you. You can then click the "get list" button in the bottom middle and the channels will be listed for you.

OK. I entered a nickname and an alternate. I left the Username and User Information with the default entries. So far so good.

If I hover my mouse over the IRC spot at the bottom of the contacts list it states IRC irc.icq.com - online.

When I attempt to obtain the list of chat rooms the Server Name and Filename are still blank. Why can't I get Trillian to give me this list?? Stupid stupid thing

Any ideers?? (as we say in Bristol)

This is a bit of an annoyance with trillian - when it's connecting to IRC, even if it's not having much luck, it'll show up as "online". What I suggest is you click on the IRC spot and choose "toggle status window" to show the IRC server messages window. If it's got a longish welcome message (usually includes some rubbish ASCII) then you are connected. If you're getting something like "can't connect to server (some reason why here)" then that's your problem.
