which emoticons go with which service?
the pop-up menu shows me over 200 different emoticons. i know that they all don't work on every service. is there a setting that i can change somewhere so that only the appropriate (usable) emoticons show in the window (i.e.: AIM-supported emoticons in a AIM conversation window)?
if i have no way of knowing which emoticons can be viewed by the recipient and which will be displayed on their screens as a meaningless combination of symbols, then it seems that ALL of the emoticons are useless to me.
i am using Basic 3.0.

seriously, i can't believe that i don't see more posts from folks asking about this. when i open the emoticon list, i have no way of telling which one will be able to be viewed by its recipient within their IM environment. the whole emoticon list is therefore useless.
i DID try the Native Icon set at deviantart.com, and followed the instructions carefully.
what does everyone else do with the emoticon list? not use them? guess at which ones to use? memorize which ones work and which don't?
c'mon, people. someone must have an answer.

Actually all icons seems to appear in a giant list when you use the basic version of Trillian 3. After upgrading to pro, all icons were sorted in categories (MSN compatible, Basic icons, etc...)

Hmm, maybe the Basic version doesn't support the emoticon "groups"? I honestly don't know. And I don't really care if my buddies see the same emotes as I do. That's their problem.

lol... except that the whole reason for my line of questioning is not that they don't see the same emotes, but it is that there are so many emotes, some of them rather interesting and clever, that are not supported by every service. of course the normal smilies convey as (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) , but some of the others, if not supported by the recipient's service, will show up on the their screen as a meaningless mess of symbols like (8*%').
i guess this is the kick i need to upgrade to Pro.
can any of you Pro users give me any other compelling reasons to upgrade?

Honestly, if you're not a webcam addicted (I'm not using that at all), there is no BIG reason to upgrade to pro.
However, even if it only adds what I'd call "goodies", considering it's a software I use something like 15 hours a day, at home and at work, $25 is not a lot, and I really enjoy the goodies, like:
- Metacontacts, it cleans up the list, and it's handled in an intelligent way (double click on a meta contact opens the first sub contact that is available, or away if none are available, and offline if all sub contacts are offline)
- History: clean, with bookmarks, organized by days, searchable
- Display of last history lines in silver when you open a conversation, allowing you to remember what you were talking about if needed (+ a line to help start reading when you received many messages)
- Some other goodies I don't really use.
(and of course, plugin support, and other IMs...)
Regards,
