Plug-In Updates...
Looking down the road with Astra, is CS looking to make plug-in updates more friendly?
Right now it's kind of pain when King IR releases a revision of Good news - I constantly have to launch his self-coded "Check for Updates" separately from the self-check that Astra (or Trillian 3.x) performs.
Will Astra eventually check those non-core plug-ins for updates automatically (and update them) if those plug-ins (and updates) are hosted in the "Downloads" section of the community? This just seems to be a logical progression in advancing this toolset.
As a similar example, I'd point people to looking at World of Warcraft and WoWAce ( http://www.wowace.com/wiki/Main_Page). Effectively any mod for WoW that is written against the Ace toolset is tracked from an application and users can auto-patch and update all their Ace mods without having to individually hunt and peck for the files.
This first image shows a list of all installed add-ons a person has. The blue entries are showing an update available for those mods.
This second image shows a single command will auto-select all outdated mods and update them.
I'd really like to see this functionality rolled out with Astra when it comes time for a release party. Preferrably refined so when Astra checks for its own updates, it's also checking the associated plug-ins and patching as it goes.
Any takers?

This would be great.
Even 1 better would be if skins and packs could be updated this way too.. but plugins would be a good start.

Hi
Well with WebStatus it communicates with a single server (at this stage) it then sends it's version to the server, so if there is an update, then it tells the plugin, it is limited to one notice a day (other wise you would get one every 5 minutes.

If the WebStatus plug-ins was hosted here on the CS site, couldn't your code look here at startup for an update?
The point of this would be for devs who have "official" plug-ins (for lack of better terms) they can be hosted on the CS site and additional updates can be expected to be goten from here.
I'd presume that there'd be some QC put in place so that these plug-ins get screened before being available on the CS side of it all...

Yes, I would say even if it was just the most popular mostly stable plugins it would be a great system...
XFire, Good News, TrillyTunes, Webstatus, Trigger, etc... (no offense to any not listed)

Well they already have the plugins database, if DEVs used that for their stable releases, Then all CS would need to do is check the version numbers for the plugins and if they differ, notify the user with the new version and a link to the new version...
This is sort of what webstatus does...

Trolling bump...
Actually, I just realized this feature request is in the Top 10 vote getters for new features of Astra - 23 votes.
I actually got two hits on it last night, so I thought I'd bump the thread and refresh the topic.
If you haven't voted already, please support this feature request. It would greatly enhance the user experience by NOT having to get your plug-in/skin/sound pack/icon pack updates from multiple locations. It would be STANDARD FUNCTIONALITY built into Astra. Presumably this would be some kind of Astra Pro feature, as plug-ins are only engineered to work with Trillian Pro (assuming this logic still carries forward into Astra.)

Its a great idea
here is another example of a 'Plugin' monitoring feature
(from TrueLaunchBar )
It allows you to download , install, check for updates (both released/beta).

Yeah, I found this thread/bug this morning and added my name to the list. Would really be nice for the 3rd party plugins...as well as skins, smiley packs, icons, etc.

Well, thisfeature seems to slowly be taking on more and more support. Just under 30 votes at this point. Although I believe Astra is feature complete, I'm wondering if this could come as a later release???
Oh yeah - and all you new testers should get out and vote for this!

CS,
Any chance this feature request is getting any kind of traction, or is it possible to provide some kind of update (here or blog) that lets users know how Astra-oriented plug ins are going to get managed going forward?
Just looking for an update, as managing plug-ins and that update thread manually is becoming a labor of love.
This feature request is now the second most requested feature behind the Metacontact window...Where's the love?
